What is BBC iPlayer?
BBC iPlayer. The BBC’s iPlayer is a video-on-demand service. Mobile phones and tablets, as well as personal computers and smart televisions, are all supported by the service. There is no commercial advertising on iPlayer services supplied to UK viewers.
The History of BBC iPlayer
Ben Lavender, a BBC staffer who was upset by attempting to bit-torrent Buffy the Vampire Slayer, came up with the idea for the BBC iPlayer in 2005. He went on a “road-show” around the BBC to market the idea, and the Director General assured him that he had “saved the BBC.” BBC Redux was created as a proof-of-concept for a cross-platform streaming system based on Flash Video. : 15 On December 25, 2007, the BBC iPlayer exited beta and went online.
Instead of just downloading specific episodes, users will now be able to batch record series, meaning that you won't miss any of your favourite shows again.
If you fancy taking a look at what your friends have been watching you can now do this through the Friends Recommendations section of iPlayer.
Live channel hopping
There is now a one-click window between channels, which means that you can essentially channel hop the iPlayer's live TV content.
