IT infrastructure can be classified into 3 main categories: System management, Network management and Storage management. Each of these categories relates to the knowledge pertaining to a specific component. 

Systems management: This usually covers the more complex context of all IT assets found within a data centre. The person overseeing this management is usually the CTO of the business. This includes management of security initiatives, event management, log management and configuration management.

Network management: This refers to the management of the security networks. Usually this is done by an IT security and operations analyst, who is in charge of configuring networks to make sure that all resources are correctly allocated to the applications where they are needed. 

Storage management: Think about this as being the bank vault where we keep all the valuables. Data storage is a critical aspect of the system, and management of this data is equally as important. This includes, but is not limited to, the oversight of stored data, data compression and data security. Techniques such as replication and mirroring help to secure data against deterioration and theft.
So, we can say infrastructure management is a critical step in ensuring the control of all the functions involved in data is kept up to date and secure. The goal is to ensure minimal downtime, while ensuring the products are maintaining their effectiveness.
